Unpacking the Cyber Threat Landscape in APAC: Insights from the Threat Intelligence Index

Author: Jaqueline Fong, LOGON Software Asia
In recent years, Asia has become a hub for technology innovation, attracting businesses worldwide. However, as technology advances, so do the cyber threats facing organizations.
Threat Intelligence Index 2022
The IBM Security X-Force Threat Intelligence Index shows that for the second year in a row, cybersecurity in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region has deteriorated the most compared to other regions, with APAC remaining the most attacked region in 2022.
- Backdoors were found to be the most significant shift in IT security, accounting for 20% of all cases, followed by thread hijacking and extortion.
- The region saw a 5% increase in cyberattacks, with Japan, the Philippines, Australia, India, and Vietnam being the most prevalent countries.
- Manufacturing was identified as the industry most attacked in the region, with backdoors being the top action on objective identified in 28% of cases.
Rise in Cyber Attacks in APAC
One of the main reasons for the rise in cyber attacks in the APAC region is the increasing use of cloud-based technologies. As more regional organizations move their operations to the cloud, cybercriminals find new ways to exploit vulnerabilities in cloud-based systems. The proliferation of mobile devices and the Internet of Things (IoT) also create new attack surfaces for cybercriminals to exploit.
It is important for organizations in the APAC region to be faster to detect and respond to cyber-attacks. According to the report, it takes organizations in the region an average of 197 days to identify and contain a data breach, which is significantly longer than the global average of 228 days, indicating that many regional organizations must be adequately prepared to handle cyber threats.
Conclusion
To improve cybersecurity in the region, cybersecurity must be considered a priority at the same pace as technological advancement.
Organizations must take a proactive approach to cybersecurity to address the growing threat of cyber attacks in the APAC region. This includes implementing robust security measures such as firewalls, anti-virus software, and intrusion detection systems. It also involves educating employees about the importance of cybersecurity and providing them with the training and resources they need to stay safe online.
