PL/SQL DEVELOPER

PL/SQL Developer is an Integrated Development Environment for developing, testing, debugging, and optimizing Oracle PL/SQL stored program units, such as packages, triggers, and so on. PL/SQL Developer features context-sensitive help and database object descriptions, syntax highlighting, data querying and editing, a graphical browser, and other functions to make a developer’s life easier.

PL/SQL Beautifier

The PL/SQL Beautifier allows you to format your SQL and PL/SQL code through a user-defined set of rules. Your code can automatically be beautified when you compile, save, or open a file. This feature will increase your coding productivity and will improve the readability of your PL/SQL code if you are working in large project teams.

SQL Window

The SQL Window allows you to enter any SQL statement or multiple statements and view or edit the results in a grid. The result grid supports a Query By Example mode to search specific records in a result set. You can easily recall previously executed SQL statements from a history buffer. The SQL editor provides the same powerful features as the PL/SQL Editor.

Command Window

To develop and execute SQL scripts, you can use PL/SQL Developer’s Command Window. This window has the same look and feel as SQL*Plus, and additionally has a built-in script editor with corresponding syntax highlighting. Now you can develop your scripts without the “edit script / save it / switch to SQL*Plus / run script” cycle, and without leaving the comfortable PL/SQL Developer IDE.

Reports

To run reports against your application data or against the Oracle dictionary, you can use PL/SQL Developer’s built-in Report functionality. There are a number of standard reports, and you can easily create your own custom reports. These custom reports can be saved in a report file, which can in turn be included in the reports menu. This makes it very easy to run your own frequently used custom reports.

Diagrams

The Diagram Window allows you to create a graphical representation of a selection of objects. This way you can easily visualize (a part of) the database objects of your application or project and their relations. A diagram can be used for documentation purposes, but can also serve as a workspace. Right-clicking on an object provides access to all object functions, and double-clicking on an object will invoke the default action for the object type.

Projects

To organize your work, you can use PL/SQL Developer’s built-in project concept. A project consists of a collection of source files, database objects, notes, and options. It allows you to work within the scope of a specific set of items, instead of a complete database or schema. This makes it easy to find the project items you need, to compile all project items, or to move a project from one location or database to another.

Regression Testing

For regression testing, you can use PL/SQL Developer’s built-in Test Manager. You can define and run a Test Set, and quickly determine if all tests run correctly. In case of an error, the Test Manager can launch the Debugger to investigate the cause of the error. You can run Test Sets from the Command Window for automated regression testing.

To-Do Items

You can use To-Do Items in any SQL or PL/SQL source file to make a quick note that something needs to be done in this source file. You can access this information later from the To-Do List, either at the object level or at the project level.

Object Browser

This configurable tree view displays all information that is relevant to PL/SQL development. Use it to get object descriptions, to view object definitions, to create test scripts for the debugger, to enable and disable triggers and constraints, to recompile invalid objects, to query or edit tables or view data, to search for text in object sources, to drag and drop object names into an editor, and so on.
The Object Browser additionally displays dependencies among objects, and lets you recursively expand these dependent objects (e.g., package references view, view references table, super/subtypes, and so on).

File Browser

If you frequently access source files and scripts from a limited set of locations (e.g., project directories, tool directories, and so on), you can use the File Browser for quick and easy access. Instead of opening a file selector to open or save files, you can access them directly from PL/SQL Developer’s work area. From the File Browser tree, you can access files and directories from user-defined locations on the local computer or on the network. You can quickly open, save, rename, and delete files here. You can use the File Browser as a docked or floating tool.

Connection List

PL/SQL Developer allows you to work with multiple connections simultaneously. The dockable Connection List makes working with multiple connections easy with a hierarchical view where you can quickly open windows and tools for a connection, view which windows belong to a connection, and so on.

DBMS Scheduler

You can use the DBMS Scheduler tool to access the Oracle database scheduler (DBMS_SCHEDULER) provided in Oracle10g and later. The tool can be used to manage DBMS Scheduler object definitions for object types such as Jobs, Programs, Windows, and so on. It can also be used to query job run information.

Performance Optimizing

To optimize the performance of your SQL and PL/SQL code, you can use the PL/SQL Profiler to view timing information of each executed line of PL/SQL code (Oracle8i and later).

Furthermore you can automatically get statistics on executed SQL statements and PL/SQL programs. These statistics can include CPU usage, block I/O, record I/O, table scans, sorts, and so on.

Oracle Manuals

Oracle supplies manuals in PDF and HTML format. You can integrate these manuals into PL/SQL Developer’s environment to provide context-sensitive help during editing, compilation errors, and runtime errors.

Non-PL/SQL Objects

You can view, create, and modify tables, sequences, synonyms, libraries, directories, jobs, queues, users, and roles without using any SQL. Just enter the information in an easy-to-use form, and PL/SQL Developer will generate the appropriate SQL to create or alter the object.

Template List

PL/SQL Developer’s Template List can be a real time-saver and can help you enforce standardization. Whenever you need to insert some standard SQL or PL/SQL code into an editor, and whenever you need to create a new program file from scratch, just click on the corresponding template.

Query Builder

The graphical Query Builder makes it easy to create new select statements or modify existing ones. Just drag and drop tables and views, select columns for the field list, where clause, and order by clause, join tables based on foreign key constraint definitions, and you’re done. PL/SQL Developer’s built-in Plug-In interface allows for 3rd party query builders, such as the Active Query Builder.

Compare User Objects

After making changes to table definitions, views, program units, and so on, it may be useful to propagate these changes to another database user, or to find out what exactly the differences are. This may be another development environment, a testing environment, or a production environment. The Compare User Objects function allows you to compare a selection of objects, to visualize the differences, and to execute or save a SQL script that will apply the necessary changes.

Export User Objects

To export the DDL (Data Definition Language) statements of a selection of objects of a user, you can use the Export User Objects tool. This way, you can easily recreate the objects for another user, or you can save the file(s) as a backup.

Tools

PL/SQL Developer includes several tools to make everyday development easier. You can recompile all invalid objects, search for text in database sources, import and export tables, generate test data, import text files or ODBC data, compare table data, monitor dbms_alert and dbms_pipe events, view session information, and so on.

Redesigned Debugger

The debugger has been redesigned and now automatically displays all local and global variables:

If you select a different stack frame, the variable list will be updated automatically.
Compound variables like records and object instances can be expanded in the variable list.
When debugging member functions or procedures, the Self variable will be available in the variable list.
When debugging a row level trigger, the Old and New variables will be available in the variable list.
Global Variables are available when debugging a package function or procedure.
The call stack and variable list can be placed at the right (default), left, or bottom of the Test Window.

Support added for DBMS_DEBUG_JDWP

The debugger now supports both the DBMS_DEBUG and DBMS_DEBUG_JDWP system. You can select your preferred debug system in the preferences, which can be overruled in a Test Window when starting the debugger.

The DBMS_DEBUG_JDWP system has the following advantages over the DBMS_DEBUG system:

It allows for JAVA SOURCE debugging.
It can display collections of a compound data type.
It will display date values with time fraction if present, regardless of NLS_DATE_FORMAT.

Because the DBMS_DEBUG_JDWP system is more complex to setup, a new JDWP Configuration Wizard has been added:

The JDWP Configuration Wizard allows you to quickly configure, test, and fix the listener port, object and system privileges, and firewall rules necessary for DBMS_DEBUG_JDWP usage.

Support added for Github Copilot

The AI Assistant now supports GitHub Copilot both for free and paid subscriptions through the Copilot CLI interface. This interface can be installed and configured in a few easy steps. After installation, you can enable the GitHub Copilot CLI system and you are ready to go:

Support added for Oracle 23ai MLE Modules

PL/SQL Developer now supports MLE (Multilingual Engine) Modules in the Program Window for editing and compilation, and in a new “MLE Modules” folder in the Object Browser.

MLE Modules are also supported in the Find Database Objects tool, Compile Invalid Objects tool, Export User Objects tool, and the Compare User Objects tool. In the File Extension preferences you can define a default file extension for MLE Modules.

Support added for Oracle 23ai Domains

A “Domains” folder has been added to the Object Browser.
The Domain popup menu in the Object Browser includes a View, Edit, Drop, and Properties function.
A File > New > Domain menu item has been added with a corresponding template.
The Table Definition Editor now support domain columns.
DDL for Tables now include domain column definitions.

Support added for Oracle 23ai Annotations

Annotations added to the Table Definition Editor at the column and table level.
DDL for Tables and Views now include annotations.
Annotations and Annotation Usage have been added to the Object Browser.

Support added for Oracle 26ai Assertions

An “Assertions” folder has been added to the Object Browser.
The Assertion popup menu in the Object Browser includes a View, Edit, Drop, and Properties function.
A File > New > Assertion menu item has been added with a corresponding template.

Excel Importer added

The new Excel Importer can import data directly from an Excel file, without the need for an ODBC driver like in previous PL/SQL Developer versions. On the “Data from Excel” page you can select the sheet from the Excel file that you want to import, as well as the header line and the first and last line that you want to import:

Instead of selecting an Excel file you can also copy a selection in the Excel application and use the “Paste data” button.

On the “Data to Oracle” page you can map the Excel data to a table and column, exactly as in the Text Importer and ODBC Importer.

AI Assistant Enhancements

The default AI System models have been updated to the latest versions.
A “Keep Selection” output option has been added to the AI Function definition. When enabled, the generated code in the editor is automatically selected afterwards.
A new Test button for AI Systems allows you to quickly test the AI System configuration.
The AI Usage report has a new “By Month” grouping option.
The AI Usage report has a new sort order button.
AI System and AI Functions can now be copied and pasted in text format.
AI Configuration grids now have an alternate row color for better readability.
The AI Assistant function menu is now directly available for an object from the Object Browser for informative functions like “Explain”, “Review”, and “Ask Question”. The AI function will take the source of the selected object as input.
The AI Dialog functions now have a “Save as SQL” button.
The Answer pane of the AI Dialog functions now have a popup menu to copy code or to open the code in a Program Window or SQL Window.
If an AI Function result is truncated or only comments, the AI Assistant will now display a warning when replacing selected code.

SQL Window Enhancements

Large number fields will now be displayed with full Oracle precision.
Function keys have been added for “Copy Header” and “Copy As Expression List”.
You can now paste multi-line text into the Column Filter of the result set toolbar.
If execution time is more than 100 seconds, it will be displayed as hh:mm:ss on the status bar.
You can now use &Count in the “TAB=Name” comment directive to show the rows fetched or affected in the tab caption.
The updating table is now determined from the rowid instead of order of the table list of a select statement.
Disabling substitution variables now also disables bind variables.

Command Window Enhancements

Large number fields will now be displayed with full Oracle precision.
The SET FEEDBACK command now supports the ONLY and SQL_ID clauses.
Unsupported SET commands (e.g. SET NEWPAGE) will no longer display an error when executed from a batch script.

Programming Code Ligature support added

The Editor will now display programming code ligatures when using a font that supports them (e.g. “Cascadia Code”, “Fira Code”, or “JetBrains Mono”). Programming code ligatures combine multiple characters (like != or ->) into a single glyph, or improves the alignment of these characters. This makes the code more readable:

The ligatures take up the exact same space as the standard characters, so that alignment is preserved. In the font selector you can filter on ligature support, so that you can quickly make a selection. Programming code ligature support is enabled by default, but can be disabled in the preferences if necessary.

Editor Enhancements

Many performance improvements for large sources (loading, navigating, editing, copying, parsing).
Hyperlink Navigation with Right-Click on a Table or View will open a SQL Window with query results.
The Find & Replace dialog now has a Mute button to suppress sound notifications.
A new “Open in VS Code” item has been added to the popup menu.
The filter of the Recall Statement function will now immediately be applied as you type.
The Code Assistant now also lists declarations from the package specification when editing a package body.

Large Data Editor Enhancements

Added the ability to format and parse HTML.
A new “Auto Format” option has been added to the popup menu, to automatically format XML, HTML or JSON.
Format autodetection has been improved.

PDF Viewer Enhancements

A new “Fit Width” button has been added to zoom in for improved readability.
The performance has been improved for very large documents like some Oracle manuals.

External Tool Enhancements

A new “line” and “column” parameter has been added to pass the current editor position to an external tool.
A new “Editor Text Only” option has been added, to pass the only the text of the current editor, instead of the complete file.
New “Run Hidden” and “Run Minimized” options have been added to hide or minimize the external tool application window.

Other enhancements

Copying a grid to the clipboard now also includes HTML format, for pasting in applications that support HTML.
New “Application Title Format” and “Application Title Alignment” preferences have been added.
The Application Title format can now be customized to include connection information, window information, workset information, and project information. The Application Title can additionally be centered or left-aligned.
Ctrl-C from Object Browser, File Browser, Connection List, and Template List now copies the selected items to the clipboard.
A new Oracle > Options preference: “Use FORCE option for View DDL” has been added. It can be set to “Only for Exports”, “Always”, or “Never”.
On the window tab bar, you can now close all windows to left or right of the selected tab.
When closing multiple windows with changes, you now have a “Same for all Windows” option.
Preferences for File Extensions now support * and ? wildcards for the list of “Other” extensions.
When a file is opened, the status bar will now show the version control status, including the Git branch.
The Uppercase and Lowercase function keys now also work in editable grids.
PL/SQL Beautifier now shows a status message when finished
File > Close All will now ask for confirmation if a Workset is open, to prevent that the Workset is inadvertently cleared
New User Interface > Options preference: “Show database name in window titles” (Default = On).
The preference “User Interface > Use multi-row tabs” now also applies to the window tabs bar.
Program Window Code Hierarchy buttons now have a popup hint with the first line of the code.
New Files > Format preference: “Export to Excel with alternate row colors” (Default = On).
New translations: Ukrainian, Korean, Polish, and Arabic.
Preference Export and Import functions are refined and improved.

Fixes

Performance & stability improvements.
The warning “ORA-28098, Profile limits PASSWORD_LIFE_TIME and PASSWORD_GRACE_TIME are not unlimited, password will expire within <n> days” was not handled properly.
Changing a SQL Window connection with one or more LOB columns in a result set could cause an error if the “Fetch CLOBs and BLOBs on demand” preference was enabled.
Standard Queries and Standard Tests could not always be opened if the name includes non-ANSI characters.
The Large Data Editor did not have enough space in gutter for line numbers.
The Large Data Editor did not update the search location when the cursor location is changed.
Tools and Documents custom images did not always have the correct size.
When selectin text in a result grid, an incorrect “not all records fetched” warning could be displayed.
Exported Excel files with an alternate row color were now always properly readable in Dark mode.
Test Window HTP Output page did not show UTF8 characters correctly.
The Explain Plan Window would not always refresh the contents of the HTML page.
Worksets could not be opened again when the desktop parameter was specified.
The “Copy to Excel” function could cause errors when large binary data was included.

Opening a SQL File where some lines are terminated with just CL or LF characters could cause selection errors.
The size of the window icons in the window tab bar was too small.
Object attribute values of type BINARY_FLOAT and BINARY_DOUBLE could not be displayed.
Pasting text in the Editor with tabs did not always convert the tabs correctly.
Filtered templates did not always have the correct icon.
Filtered templates did not always have the appropriate popup menu items enabled.
Explain Plan did not work for a read-only connection.
Using reserved words in a quoted identifier name could cause a PL/SQL beautifier error.
AI Assistant dictionary queries did not comply with “Use DBA views if available” preference.
Java Source compilation errors were not always displayed correctly.
AI Functions did not work from a custom toolbar.
PL/SQL Beautifier could not always process Q'<strings>’ and comments with quotes within item lists.
PL/SQL Beautifier did not aways work with some case expressions.
Ctrl-Backspace did not work correctly for a column selection in the Editor.

Fetching sources from the database could be slow on networks with high latency.
When setting the NoLoadDesktop parameter, the desktop would still get loaded when closing a project.
Using Claude Sonnet 5 for the AI Assistant could cause an Access Violation.

DIRECT ORACLE ACCESS

With the Direct Oracle Access component set for Delphi or C++Builder, you can access any Oracle database directly, skipping the BDE. These easy-to-use components deliver the highest possible performance and enable you to use all Oracle-specific features, eliminating the distribution and configuration problems associated with the BDE.

FEATURES

High performance

Both online transaction and batch processing applications can benefit from Oracle’s performance features. Direct Oracle Access, as the name suggests, directly accesses the Oracle Interface. This guarantees optimal performance for standard database access functions. Support for Array Fetching, Array DML, PL/SQL Blocks, PL/SQL Tables, Local Statement Caching, and the Direct Path Load Engine enable you to optimize your application’s performance-critical functions even more.

Easy application distribution

A Direct Oracle Access application does not require middleware like the BDE or ODBC; it merely requires Oracle SQL*Net or Net8. Consequently, you can deploy your application without many of the version dependency or configuration problems typically involved with middleware installation.

Oracle Package support

Most PL/SQL code in Oracle databases is programmed in packages. Direct Oracle Access provides a TOraclePackage component that allows you to easily call packaged program units without detailed declarations of these program units and their parameters.
Furthermore Direct Oracle Access includes a Package Wizard that can generate classes to encapsulate the program units and record types defined in packages. This will make your Oracle packages a natural extension of the Object Pascal or C++ language.

TOracleDataSet

The dataset component in Direct Oracle Access supports Oracle record locking, record refreshing, server-generated values, automatic sequence value generation, and BLOB compression. Master/detail relations can automatically be set up if a foreign key exists between the master and detail table or if the master table contains one or more collection columns or attributes (nested table or varray).

Query By Example mode

The TOracleDataSet component has a Query By Example mode that enables you to provide QBE Forms in your application without any additional programming, and without any additional components or controls. The resulting QBE queries are performed on the Oracle Server, so that performance will be optimal and network traffic will be minimal. The user can supply simple query values such as JONES or 100, can include wildcard characters for string values such as JON%, and can include comparison operators such as >, <, NOT, BETWEEN, IN, and so on.

Oracle Monitor

To monitor the database access activities of your Direct Oracle Access application you can use the Oracle Monitor utility. It displays the SQL, variables, timestamp, elapsed time, network statistics, database statistics and query execution plan of each activity. This can be helpful to find performance bottlenecks, for tuning purposes, and to solve application errors.

Alert and Pipe events

The Oracle Server includes a dbms_alert and dbms_pipe package for event processing. The TOracleEvent in Direct Oracle Access can function as a receiver for these events. It works in a background thread of your application and can propagate database events to the familiar object events. These events can occur synchronously or asynchronously with the main thread of your application.

SQL scripts

If you need to execute many data definition language (DDL) statements, for example to perform the database installation part of your application, you can use the TOracleScript component. It has a property editor that allows you to develop the script and the individual commands. The extensible script language follows the basic SQL*Plus syntax and supports all SQL statements. It also supports substitution variables to make your scripts customizable.
