How Hong Kong is Battling Cyber Scams with Smart Identity and Access Management

Author: Jaqueline Fong, LOGON Software Asia
In recent months, Hong Kong has seen a surge in scams leading to immense financial losses for its residents. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has launched a creative public awareness campaign featuring the comical yet sinister “despicable banana” to educate citizens on the dangers of falling prey to online scams.
The campaign, aptly named “Click the Links, Fall for Scams!”, underscores the importance of remaining vigilant in an increasingly digital landscape, and why it is important to implement the right Identity and Access Management (IAM) solutions.
The Threat Landscape – Phishing & Vishing
In 2024, more than 44,000 scam cases were reported in Hong Kong, accumulating losses of around HK$9.15 billion (US$1.2 billion), coming from phishing and vishing threats.
Common form of phishing and vishing includes:
- Deceptive Emails: Attackers often create emails that mimic reputable organizations, prompting recipients to click on malicious links or download harmful attachments.
- Fake Websites: Phishing websites are designed to look like legitimate sites, tricking users into entering personal information.
- Urgency and Fear Tactics: Phishing messages often create a sense of urgency (e.g., “Your account will be suspended!”) to provoke hasty actions without critical thinking.
- Spoofed Caller IDs: Attackers may use technology to disguise their phone numbers, making it appear as if they are calling from a legitimate organization.
- Sophisticated Scripts: Vishing attackers often use detailed scripts to gain the target’s trust, posing as technical support, bank representatives, or government officials.
With new scam tactics emerging continually, including fake customer service phone scams and investment frauds, individuals and organizations must equip themselves with the right tools to manage their digital identity effectively.

Our IAM Solution Portfolio
At LOGON Software Asia, our IAM solutions empower organizations to manage user identities and control access to vital systems, applications, and data. Here’s how our offerings combat the growing threat of scams and fraud:
1. Enhanced Security
- Centralized User Management: Our IAM solutions provide a unified platform for managing user identities, significantly reducing the risk of unauthorized access. This centralized approach helps organizations maintain strict security protocols.
- Role-Based Access Control (RBAC): By implementing RBAC, organizations can ensure that users have access only to the resources necessary for their roles, minimizing the potential for data breaches.
- Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Adding layers of security through MFA protects against credential theft, ensuring that only authorized users can access sensitive information.
2. Improved Operational Efficiency
- Automated User Provisioning and Deprovisioning: Our IAM systems streamline the onboarding and offboarding processes, allowing organizations to quickly manage user access as employees join or leave. This automation reduces administrative burdens and enhances efficiency.
- Single Sign-On (SSO): With SSO capabilities, users can access multiple applications with a single set of credentials. This not only simplifies the user experience but also decreases password fatigue and related security risks.
3. Compliance Assurance
- Regulatory Compliance: Many organizations in Asia face stringent regulatory requirements regarding data protection. Our IAM solutions help ensure compliance with industry standards and legal regulations, reducing the risk of fines and penalties.
- Audit Trails and Reporting: Our systems provide detailed logs and reports on user activity, enabling organizations to conduct audits and demonstrate compliance with regulatory requirements.
4. Mitigation of Cybersecurity Threats
- Real-Time Monitoring and Alerts: Our IAM solutions include monitoring capabilities that detect suspicious activities in real time. This proactive approach allows organizations to respond quickly to potential threats, reducing the likelihood of successful attacks.
- Identity Verification Processes: Advanced identity verification techniques help organizations confirm the legitimacy of users, further mitigating risks associated with identity theft and fraud.
5. Scalability and Adaptability
- Tailored Solutions: Our IAM solutions adapt to the specific needs of different industries and organizations, whether small businesses or large enterprises. This scalability ensures that organizations can grow without compromising security.
- Integration with Existing Systems: Our IAM solutions can seamlessly integrate with existing IT infrastructures, ensuring a smooth transition and minimal disruption to operations.
